My husband's running joke this month has been that back in the day the leading cause of death was January. Yes, it's a bad dad joke. But, this January, whew! What in the world. In Iowa, we have had over 25+ inches of snow in a short period of time. We have had terrible windchills. Every single week there has been at least one day of school canceled. We haven't had a January like this in quite awhile. The impact of the weather brings about many ideas of phenomena to discuss with students to get them talking as their life experiences are expanding. What has the snow done to the trees? How much does this snow weigh? Will the tree have a different shape in the spring? Why is there only snow on one side of the tree? Kids will have interesting questions. Have you ever tried a QFT or Question Formulation Technique? It allows students to generate a list of questions and consider the types of questions they are asking. Are these questions investigable? Are these open or closed questions?
We need to nurture the questioning element for students. It's a skill that needs to be practiced and honed. Asking good questions is an essential skill for life. You can learn more about the Question Formulation Technique on the Right Question Institute's website.

I recently decided to check in with X after a long absence and have been pleasently surprised A) there are still people on here B) educators are still sharing great things! I saw this infographic on X that got me thinking.
I've been in a lot of classrooms since becoming a digital learning consultant and instructional coaches as some of my most favorite people. There support of teachers in buildings is critical for teachers. As an instructional coach what are the things to keep top-of-mind when doing a classroom observation? If you don't have a walk-through or observation form in your district, this infographic provides great ideas to consider when coaching a teacher. It could be a great opportunity to share this directly with teachers to have them select what they would like feedback on.
